Friends of ASCCA: McCartney shares her fondest camp memories

Hello readers! Happy late Valentines! As you may already know, earlier this month Camp ASCCA celebrated Camp ASCCA Spirit and Recruitment Day! So, I’ve decided to dedicate this post to celebrating and sharing my memories of Camp – the happiest place on earth.

I’ve been attending Camp since I was six years old, and ever since then, it’s been what I look forward to most about summertime. The friendly faces, the exciting activities, and the overwhelming sense of camaraderie you feel just immediately makes camp like a second home. There, no matter who you are, or how you were born, everyone has a chance to meet people who understand them, and to feel like they belong. I have met so many friends through Camp ASCCA, and to this day I still keep in touch with and think about my camp family.

One of my favorite memories of Camp is my first time riding the zip-line. I remember being raised up to the platform and being amazed at how close I was to the trees. I felt like a superhero up there, like I was about to go on a perilous quest. All of the excitement and daring faded though, when I reached the top. I was hooked in and ready to go, but the minute my feet dangled over its edge, that platform seemed to grow to the size of Everest.

I, was terrified.

After a few seconds of coaxing, (and some whimpering) I agreed to let them push me off… And. It. Was. Amazing!

I soared out of the trees and into the clearing ahead, the lake glittering in sight. I felt so free! I was so happy I couldn’t help but scream, it was so much fun! As a kid, I’d always dreamed of adventure, and always loved nature. But those two things never mixed well with my AMC, so a part of me always thought that those were the kind of dreams that would never come true. Camp ASCCA changed that. They made me feel like I was the daring adventurer I’d always dreamed of being, and I can never thank them enough for that.

I could go on and on talking about Camp, but this post may already be too long, so I’ll save the rest for another day. Instead, I’d like to sign off ASCCA style with the Goodnight Song.

When we grow too old to dream, we’ll have you to remember
When we grow too old to dream, your love will live in our hearts
So campers, hold hands
And say we’ll never part
For Camp ASCCA!
And all our friends
Will live within our hearts

God gave the wise men their wisdom, and to the poets their dreams
To father and mother, the love for each other
But he left me out so it seemed
I wandered round broken hearted, thinking life was an endless affair

Then God gave me you,
It was then that I knew
He’d given me more than my share

So campers hold hands,
And say we’ll never part
For Camp ASSCA!
And all our friends
Will live within our hearts.
