Session 6: Outdoor Education Is A Treat!

Kris gives a brief lesson about soil horizons before beginning the activity.

Every week at Camp, our campers attend the nature program rotation. Kris Shelby, a member of our outdoor education program staff, runs this rotation every week. Each week, he comes up with a different activity that allows our campers to have fun and learn something new!

This week, our campers who attend the nature rotation will learn about soil horizons and the purpose of each level.

Our staff and campers got to enjoy a treat after learning about soil horizons!

For a more hands-on learning experience, campers get to make a treat with multiple ingredients that each represent a different layer of soil.

Campers use chocolate chips, peanut butter, graham crackers, vanilla and chocolate pudding, and crushed sandwich cookies to represent the different soil horizons. To top it off, campers add some gummy worms to represent the earthworms that live in the organic layer!

We love learning new things while also having a great time! To see more photos of our nature rotation and Session 6, click here.
