Why ASCCA: Bryce’s Journey to Finding Community and Unconditional Love

For nearly five decades, Camp ASCCA has enriched the lives of individuals with disabilities, their families, and staff members. At ASCCA, people are valued for who they are — not defined by their disabilities. We provide year-round, inclusive, and barrier-free camping experiences for children and adults with disabilities, offering a unique environment where campers can embrace their individuality and independence with the support and supervision they need.

Many of our staff members return summer after summer, and we’re excited to highlight their stories! Why ASCCA delves into the heart of the question — why?

Bryce’s story with Camp ASCCA began in 2021 and continued over the following years. During his time at ASCCA, he found a home away from home, a sense of community, meaningful connections, and steadfast love. Today, he proudly shares his ‘Why ASCCA’ story.

“My ASCCA journey began in 2021 when my friend, Clay Pritchett, convinced me to sign up as a counselor for the summer. I had worked at summer camps before and was majoring in special education at the time, so I figured it would be a perfect fit for my future career. What I didn’t expect was the profound and lasting impact Camp ASCCA would have on me.

After just one week, it was clear how special this place was to so many people, and I knew that summer would be life-changing. I returned in 2022 as adventure program staff and again in 2023 as a Unit Leader. Each year, driving down ASCCA Drive felt like coming home. The sense of community and unconditional love that surrounds camp made every day feel like a gift.

I’m incredibly thankful to Clay and the entire ASCCA staff for giving me the opportunity to grow, serve, and connect in ways I never imagined. This fall, I’ll begin graduate school at Boston University, pursuing a degree in Occupational Therapy. While I don’t know exactly when I’ll be back at ASCCA, I know it will always hold a special place in my heart. The memories, the friendships, and the lessons I learned there will stay with me for a lifetime.

To anyone even slightly considering applying to work at Camp ASCCA: do it! It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and will always be a part of who I am.”
